Pinups

A spin on the classic

Instead of just having a beautiful pinup picture, I instead have something very different. In researching what the pinup models were required to do, I learned that they modeled in very small, dank studios, holding pose after pose while the artist sketched them. After taking the sketches, the model was released and the artist would then fabricate the image into an unrealistic setting and create the acceptable amount of display of undergarments. The pinup as a painting or drawing was completely acceptable in everything from advertising to magazine covers. Had any of the models been photographed, however, it would have created a huge uproar over the indecency. That is what I have tried to capture here. These are models posing in small, run-down studio, reminiscent of the times, and rather than painting or creating the perfect scene, I have interfered with the balance by photographing them both intimately and in a shabby setting. The result is an unsettling pinup image.
